• 19th C guitar, by Rene Lacote, 1839

  • SOLD

  • Details:

  • Table- Strong grained pine, condition virtually perfect, never opened, purfling whalebone-ebony lines, ditto rosette. A small opening in the centre seam behind bridge, repaired, virtually invisible.
  • Bridge- has been off, then re-fitted using 2 small screws, ( now removed, and holes plugged,) retaining original rather than make a new bridge, for originality. There are some minor signs of this event still visible externally
  • Back- 'Plum-Pudding' mahogany, veneered on to pine base, as was common practice, 2 small cracks, repaired internally. Never opened. Bindings ebony.
  • Ribs- Perfect, same wood as back.
  • Neck -perfect, action perfect. Cuban mahogany.
  • Fingerboard- retains old frets, possibly even original, and these have not been altered for originality. The guitar could be re-fretted if necessary, but appears to be perfectly playable as it is.
  • Intonation- good, but these guitars were not necessarily fretted originally in equal temperament, so some allowance has to be made in these guitars, not always perfectly' in tune' to modern ears. This example however is good.
  • Head in good condition, stamped and gilded Lacote a Paris, original machines in good working condition. Some very minor old cracks to the head veneer, repaired along time ago, hardly visible.
  • Internally- the guitar has had some work done, ie regluing of bridge, minor cracks treated as stated above- however, it retains all the original features, bars etc, and in my opinion, has never been opened. Label correct and original, but now a small fragment has been torn off from the left hand side while out on approval recently, - the photo was taken in May, prior to this damage. Missing fragment around 2mm x 4 mm, crescent shaped.
  • 63 cms scale length, width of fingerboard at nut, 48,5 mm, (spacing now at 42 mm) at bridge 62 mm spacing
  • This guitar is a particulary fine example of this sought after and rare maker. Another recently sold at auction in June 2003 in France, slightly more ornate than this example but was in poor condition compared to this one, and sold for a very high price, much higher than the asking price for this one. A better example than the guitar on offer here probably cannot be can be found anywhere in the world. For any further information, please contact us. Comes with fitted case, is strung correctly with Kurschner strings, all action and frets serviced, ie fully playable, a unique opportunity to acquire a particulary fine instrument.
